“When I started this painting, I wanted to try something very different for myself. I challenged myself to work with only five colors, which meant I had to slow down and really focus on value, texture, and form instead of relying on color variety. That limitation ended up shaping the entire mood of the piece—quiet, restrained, and intentional—much like the desert itself.
I’ve always loved painting yucca plants, especially the yucca plants of New Mexico. There’s something about their structure that feels both strong and patient. They stand upright, almost watchful, and I often think of them as silent guardians of the landscape. In this painting, the yucca became a natural focal point—rising out of the scene while still belonging completely to it.
By keeping the palette limited and the movement subtle, I wanted the viewer to feel a sense of stillness—like that moment in the desert when everything is quiet and time seems to slow down. Quiet Desert Sentinels isn’t about drama or motion; it’s about presence, endurance, and the quiet strength of a place that doesn’t need to announce itself.”
